Story Notes: This story starts sometime between the episodes “Ground State” (4:2) and “The House Always Wins” (4:3) of Angel. The Potter-verse has been moved up 12 years. The title refers to two conversations between Wesley and Justine in “Deep Down” (4:1):
"We're always a slave, Justine. We just couldn't see the chains."
You can continue being a slave, Justine. Or you can live your life. Your choice."
Chapter Notes: Some dialogue has been modified from the episodes “Forgiving” (3:17), “Double or Nothing” (3:18), “Deep Down” (4:1) and “Ground State” (4:2). Thanks to my beta deiticlast and the livejournal communities of  britpickery , hp_britglish and little_details for all of their help.

Joys of Procrastinating

It’s amazing how much I’ve been doing in order to avoid looking at a nearly blank page of my “Wesley becomes Harry’s guardian” story. Sadly, working out the title hasn’t been one of those things.

I have on the other hand joined britpickery, hp_britglish, little_details and posted some questions in each, and I found someone at twisting the hellmouth to bounce ideas off of. I think I’ve done more brainstorming pre-writing than I’ve ever done before.  I usually brainstorm as I go.

I also made my first icon. I’m embarrassed at just how long it took me to do such a simple icon.

Considering getting back into writing

I used to write all the time.  Unfortunately, I haven't been very successful at it.  Writers block tends to kill whatever story I'm working on.  An original fantasy story died after more than 26,000 words.  After awhile I just stopped even attempting to write.  I tried to get back into it years ago with a Star Wars story "Another Path to Follow", but writer's block killed it. I've been thinking of trying to get back into writing again, but given my history I'm not sure.  It doesn't help that I tend to write long so dipping my toe in with drabbles is unlikely.

I'm toying with an Angel crossover with Harry Potter.  The idea is that after Petunia and Vernon die a pre-Hogwarts Harry goes to live with an early season 4 Wesley.  Given the timing they would probably live in England.
